Student Advising Center

Academic advising is an important part of your success as a JJC student. Advisors help you make decisions for your future career and educational goals and help guide you when you may find yourself stuck. Our office is committed to assisting students with academic and transfer planning needs. Learn how to connect with us and set an advising appointment below.

I'm a New Student. How Do I Know When I'm Ready for Student Advising?

All new students must complete the first seven Admitted Student steps before making an appointment to see an advisor. This includes watching the New Student Presentation via MyJJC.

Our highly trained professionals will assist you with academic planning, which includes:

  • Orienting you to the college and helping you navigate the first semester registration process
  • Academic and career coaching to help you make educational choices
  • Plans that show you exactly the courses you need for your chosen academic pathway
  • Assistance with preparing for transferring to another college or university
  • Programs and activities to help you adjust to college and address possible barriers to your success
  • A support plan and consistent outreach to help you stay on track
  • Help navigating the self-service resources in MyJJC

To select classes that support your academic pathway, be sure to schedule an appointment with an advisor dedicated to your success by viewing the appointment setting instructions below.

If you select a virtual appointment, please review the FAQ Sheet for Virtual Advising.

For more information, please visit the Student Advising Center on the MyJJC Portal

How and when to see an Advisor will depend on your student classification. Please select your student classification to view appointment scheduling instructions below:

Also, refer to STEP 5 below to learn if you are instead required to meet with a Faculty Advisor for your intended JJC career program.

    Step 5

    5) Check the NEW STUDENT FLYER to see if your program requires that you meet directly with a department Faculty Advisor without attending a New Student Advising Session (NSA). If so, DO NOT register for NSA and instead contact the Faculty Advisor identified for your program directly. If not, proceed to STEP 6 below:

    Step 6

    6) Schedule & attend your New Student Advising (NSA) session.

    • This is where you will meet an advisor before registering for your first semester courses.

    -or-

    5. Watch the New Student Presentation.

    6. Do not schedule a New Student Advising Session (NSA), and instead check the FACULTY ADVISOR LIST and contact the advisor identified for your major or program to set an advising appointment. If you are an undecided major, or your program does not have an advisor identified, contact the JJC Student Advising Center: 815-280-2673.

    7. If you need additional assistance selecting a transfer school, please review our transfer resources and University Partnerships, then set a Transfer Exploration Appointment.

It is strongly recommended that students do not wait for the registration cycle to begin planning for their next semester.
This is a period of high-volume traffic in the Student Advising Center and wait times for an appointment will be much longer.

  • Visiting/Guest Students

If you want to take JJC classes for a semester to transfer back to your four-year school, you are considered a Visiting or Guest Student. Typically, four-year university students do this in the summer to save money and get ahead, but this may be accomplished during any term.

    Visiting or “Guest” Student Instructions:
    STEP1

    1) Complete a JJC application. Under "Educational Goals," select "I only plan to complete one or several courses." Under "Select a Degree/Certificate," select "Non-Degree Seeking."

    STEP 2

    2) After 24-72 hours, set up your JJC username and password by visiting the ID/username/password page.

    STEP 3

    3) If the course(s) you want to take have prerequisites required (and you've already taken them at your primary institution), send an email to gueststudents@jjc.edu that includes the following:

    • Your name
    • Your JJC student ID
    • The course name, the course number and the section number for all classes you want to take
    • An attached copy of your unofficial transcript

Within two business days, you'll receive information from JJC about whether or not your prerequisite was met. If so, a waiver will be entered into the system and you will be able to register online.

    STEP 4

    4) Speak to your university and/or college advisor to find out about transfer guidelines for your program to ensure the transferability of JJC coursework at your school. Also check to verify that the JJC course(s) will not only transfer back to your home institution, but that they will also apply to your degree.

Additionally, Transferology is a free nationwide, web-based transfer information resource that may provide you with transfer equivalency information. Your university advisor can also provide you with the most up-to-date information.

    STEP 5

    5) Register for your course(s):

    To Register Online:

    1. Visit MyJJC.
    2. Log in.
    3. Navigate to the "Self-Service Menu" and click on "Register & View Schedule."

Faculty & GAP Advisors are assigned to students who have declared a particular major or degree. These are individuals who either teach in the field of concentration or have received specialized training in the requirements of a particular program.

Once you have a solid academic plan, Faculty & GAP Advisors will help you map out all the academic requirements you need to complete. Faculty Advisors are experts in specific career and major areas and are available for most JJC programs. They provide assistance with major-specific educational planning, transfer advising, and specific career-related guidance.

Before scheduling an appointment with a Faculty Advisor, students should be able to clearly answer the following questions.

    • Have you committed to a major of study?
    • Do you know which career path you are pursuing within your major of study?
    • Are you planning to transfer to another college or university after JJC?
    • What school do you plan to transfer, if applicable?

When students can confidently answer these questions, they are ready to transition to major-specific advising.

Please review the FACULTY ADVISOR list and use their contact information to schedule an appointment for major-specific educational planning and transfer advising. If students are still undecided or need assistance answering these questions, please contact the Student Advising Center for an appointment.
