Campus Sustainability Month 2023

Open to students, faculty, staff, and the community!

Learn why a sustainable future will need more than just recycling! This month we are focusing on reusing and repairing our stuff, volunteering in our community, learning about sustainability at JJC, and talking about food insecurity. Get involved at these main campus events, make friends, learn, and have some fun!!

WEEK ONE

Fighting Food Scarcity with Environmental Justice Speaker Madison Mayer. Learn about food scarcity in our communities, and how Northern Illinois Food Bank is combating Food Deserts by supplying healthy and accessible food.

Sound Healing in Nature. Join the Sustainability Union and Sacred Lotus Healing Center for a Multi-Instrumental Sound Bath outside.

  • When: Thursday, October 5
  • Time: 12pm to 1pm
  • Location: Cronin Schoolhouse in Picnic Grove.

WEEK TWO

Restoration Workday. Like working outdoors in the fresh air? Need volunteer hours? Come join the Will County Forest Preserve and the JJC Natural Sciences department to help remove invasive shrubs that are crowding out JJC's unique savannah ecosystem. Participants will haul and stack brush as well as gather and spread native plant seeds. Lunch will be provided after! Please bring: Sturdy work shoes/boots, gardening gloves, long pants, bug spray, water, warm/rain clothes. Dress for the weather!

Arboretum Tour Join Arboretum Staff in an educational walk-through of the Dr William Zales Arboretum.

  • When: Monday, October 9
  • Time: 11:45am to 1pm
  • Location: JJC greenhouse.

 

The Importance of Reuse and Repair. This meeting is an introduction to the Take-Make-Waste economy and a solution to it! Then Debra Daun in the Maker Lab will teach us how technologies such as 3D printing are helping to repair materials locally and responsibly.

  • When: Wednesday, October 11
  • Time: 12pm to 1pm
  • Location: Community event meeting at JJC’s automotive center near parking lot S6, Main Campus  A-1061, or join on Microsoft Teams.

 

Houbolt Road Clean Up. Help take care of Joliet by picking up litter outside JJC and earn community service hours. Open to the surrounding community! Bring gloves, hand sanitizer, and a friend.

  • When: Saturday, October 14
  • Time: 11am to 1pm
  • Location: JJC greenhouse parking lot.

WEEK THREE

Natural Areas Tour. Join Professor Cheryl Heeneman for a walk through the natural areas and learn more about the jewel of JJC.

  • When: Monday, October 16
  • Time: 3:15pm to 4:15pm 
  • Location: Picnic grove. 

    
Northern Illinois Food Bank Volunteer Day. Join Sustainability Union for a pack-and-sort of Northern Illinois Food Bank’s donations.

  • When: Friday, October 20
  • Time: 9am to 11:30am
  • Location: T1041, Office of Sustainability
  • To take the JJC bus, come to T-1041 at 8:30 a.m.

Busted to Beautiful Repair Café. Inspired by a movement from Amsterdam, “Repair Café". Bring your broken items for free repairs. Volunteers from the community and the college are coming together to offer their repair expertise to the Joliet area for free! Some examples include clothing, blankets, lamps, clocks, toasters, vacuums, ceramics, jewelry, bicycles, and more. You can bring in items that are broken, get them repaired, and learn how to fix things yourself. Open to the community.

  • Location: Lower J Building

WEEK FOUR

Tour LEED Campus. Join Professor Maria Rafac for a tour of JJC’s sustainable building on central campus using LEED certification.  

  • When: Monday, October 23
  • Time: 4pm to 5pm 
  • Location: A building near the entrance. 

 

Viewing Party: Going Circular Documentary. Come enjoy a documentary viewing about moving from a linear economy to a circular economy. In collaboration with JJC Business Club.

  • When: Thursday, October 26
  • Time: 5pm to 8pm
  • Location: D2001.

 

Junk to Jewels Upcycle Event. Bring unused and seemingly useless materials to be turned into art.

  • When: Monday, October 30
  • Time: 10am to 1pm
  • Location: H Bridge.
